Importance of Punjabi wedding songs


Punjabi wedding songs are a very integrated part of Punjabi Marriages. From the engagement till the marriage is complete, each and every occasion in Punjabi marriage is celebrated with songs.
Most of the Punjabis have grown up with these evergreen wedding songs.The music and lyrics in these songs are the heart and soul of the great land of Punjab. These are universally sung at Punjabi Weddings.
In the bride’s home the main events at which wedding songs are sung are listed below. This is the complete list of events for which traditionally songs were sung.
  1. At the time of writing the sahe di chithhi(Wedding card)
  2. During the song sessions (ladies sangeet) each day leading up to the wedding
  3. During preparatory work, like sifting flour, sorting stones from the daal(cereals), and rolling rotis etc.
  4. While getting the bride ready.
  5. When the doli is seen off.
In the son’s home the main occasions for singing songs are:
  1. At the time of opening the sahe di chitthi(Wedding card)
  2. During the song sessions (ladies sangeet) each day leading up to the wedding.
  3. At mahendi rassam;
  4. The day before the wedding procession when the guest and relatives give contributions to the groom;
  5. When getting the groom ready on the sihra;
  6. When groom gets on the ghori;
  7. When paying respects at religious places.
